If you've ever worked your way through a top-down sweater pattern, you'll know that half the joy of knitting is, in fact, counting! Understanding the maths that goes into writing a knitting pattern can open up a whole new world of creative opportunities to help you get the most from your knitting. This workshop will look into the maths behind knitting patterns, taking you from swatch to finished sweater. It's for anyone looking to gain confidence modifying patterns to better fit their body, or even looking to start turning their own design ideas into a fully graded knitting pattern.

We will begin with the basics of knitting tension and industry sizing standards across an inclusive size range, before looking at different top-down sweater construction methods ranging from compound raglans to modified drop shoulders. From there, we can play with different textural elements and pattern repeats to give you the tools to start translating your own ideas into your knitting. We will also explore different options for modifying existing patterns by adding short rows, waist shaping, and bust adjustments.

Most importantly, you do not have to be a confident mathematician to participate, but experience with top-down knitting would be helpful. A laptop or some graph paper would be useful to bring, but aren't strictly necessary.
