Learn how to create vibrant colour on wool yarn with natural dyes. Find out how to mordant, extract colour from baths, make a dye bath and use modifiers to extend the range of colours. A practical workshop, where people work in pairs to create colour from plants and use it to dye skeins of wool. Take home six 20g skeins of Superwash Merino fingering-weight yarn. We will use a variety of dye sources including fresh and dried plants and high quality natural dye extracts. The exact dyes will be decided nearer the time but may include madder, weld, onion skins, tansy, walnut and Saxon Blue. Key elements include an overview of the dyeing process, safety considerations, mordanting yarn, creating colour from plants, using modifiers, finishing the dyeing process and keeping records. Specific recipes for each dye bath will be included, along with guidance on getting started with natural dyeing in a home environment.
