Come and try your hand at straw plaiting and experience the working lives of many women and children during the 1800s.

Straw plaiting was once a booming British industry, employing entire communities and putting hats on heads across the country. Today it’s on Heritage Crafts Red List of critically endangered crafts, which means the skills passed down for generations are now at real risk of disappearing within a lifetime.

In this free workshop, you’ll learn from local milliner Beverley Edmondson about the history of straw plaiting, plus learn some straw plaiting techniques. You’ll come away from this session with a small piece of plaited straw to take home.

Plaiting straw itself is very accessible to all ages from around 5 years upwards.
