In their workshop in South Wales, Karl of Solace in Wood makes unique lathe-turned and hand-carved sculptural forms. Karl tries to embrace the inherent qualities of the green (wet) wood by creating objects that not only showcase the natural beauty of the material but also celebrate its organic and unpredictable nature. By deliberately incising the wood with fine slices, sometimes paper-thin, the pieces invite movement from within. As the wood dries and breathes, it begins to shift - subtly twisting, warping, and waving in response to its environment producing exciting and often unexpected results. He uses only ethically sourced and repurposed timber.
