How I got comfortable with colour and how you can too

Friday 12 September, 12pm in the Long Kiln

As a design student, I thought I would learn how to work with colour. Instead, I only learnt when I got it wrong, through less than constructive comments from tutors that really knocked my confidence and ultimately, led me to shy away from colour all together. As a designer, it took me years to rebuild that confidence, to become comfortable with colour again and to trust in my ability to craft colour palettes that would bring people joy. What I have learnt is that you need to train your instincts with colour, the way you would a muscle. It’s about small steps, being playful and inquisitive. Challenging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone in the safety of a swatch or a yarn wrap. Paying attention to the world around you and the noticing colours and colour palettes everywhere you look. One practice that has been transformative for me is collecting and archiving these combinations through keeping a colour journal. I believe that there is colour out there for all of us, and I hope that by sharing my own journey with colour, as someone who now works with it every day, it will inspire you to embark on your own, taking you to a place where you feel comfortable with colour and able to embrace the joy it can bring!
