“Like Dylan on amphetamines.”The Times
“Montague can be both mesmerizingly tender and stingingly explosive, drawing from contemporary jazz guitar heroes such as Bill Frisell as much as he does Wayne Krantz.”Jazzwise
Following the release of their new album The Shieling acclaimed singer-songwriter Sarah Gillespie and renowned guitarist and composer Chris Montague bring their distinctive musical partnership to Farnham Maltings.
Recorded in a cottage on the shores of Loch Fyne, Scotland, The Shieling is a meeting of two highly individual musical voices. Gillespie's incisive songwriting and Beat-inspired poetry sit alongside Montague's adventurous guitar playing, creating music that draws freely from folk, Americana, blues and contemporary jazz.
Gillespie is known for her sharp observation, wry humour and compelling live presence. Described by The Guardian as an “incandescent presence with superior lyrics”, she has been compared to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell and has earned five-star reviews from The Independent and The Arts Desk.
Montague is one of the UK's most distinctive and versatile guitarists and composers. Equally at home in jazz, folk and experimental music, his playing brings acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and pedal steel to the music, with an improvisational edge that can be tender, lyrical, raw or explosive.
For this special performance, Gillespie and Montague perform both as an intimate duo and with their band, opening out the rich, unpredictable sound of The Shieling into a dynamic live show.
Expect poetic storytelling, extraordinary musicianship, dark humour and music that refuses to sit neatly in one genre.
“Bob Dylan's lyrical bite and languid delivery to the forthrightness of Joni Mitchell, with a little rap-like percussiveness thrown in, is an original.”The Guardian
“Beat poet adventurer who strays beyond the realm of singer songwriter.”MOJO
“Montague is ruggedly innovative.”The Guardian
