Puccini’s Messa di Gloria is, rather like Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, a sacred work rooted in the musical language of nineteenth-century Italian opera. With lyrical slow movements and at times jovial faster movements, the choir is really put through its paces alongside grand orchestral forces and tenor and baritone solos.
For such a popular and enjoyable piece, it is remarkable that there were 70 years between its first and second performances! Schubert’s Mass in G is more devotional in style and its lighter orchestration offers some respite from the grandeur of the Puccini.
The choir is delighted to return to Farnham Maltings for this concert.
