Suminagashi ink marbling is an ancient endangered heritage craft, which originated in Japan around the 8th century. It is a perfect introduction to marbling and creating surface patterns.

During this taster workshop, you will make organic abstract patterns, using the movement of air and simple tools to create shapes in the ink on the surface of the water. We will use both plant-based black and coloured inks to create patterns and transfer them to a variety of papers. We will then make an ink marbled raw edge silk scarf. The silk scarf will be unique wearable art, short in length. The scarf will be raw edged single layer, or students can later sew as a double lined scarf.

All materials, aprons and gloves are provided.

Please bring to the workshop:

  • a notebook and a pencil

This workshop is suitable for all.
