Batik is an ancient textile technique. The pattern was traditionally applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, before coloured dyes are applied to the fabric.

You will start by creating a range of smaller experimental samples and unique outcomes on paper, before creating a larger final piece on fabric. You may choose to work with the themes of florals or abstract pattern, or perhaps take inspiration from different cultural images; alternatively, you may wish to develop ideas of your own choosing.

The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. With over 25 years as a textile designer and illustrator, Alison used this process on paper, to create highly original and decorative textile designs for the fashion industry for a number of years. Alison will guide you through a range of processes.

This workshop is suitable for those with a range of skills and creative experiences, from beginners to those looking to improve and extend their batik skills.

All workshop materials are provided. You may bring fabric if you would like to use your own fabric.

Please bring with you: Design ideas, apron, and a folder to carry work home in.
