Finalists’ portrait exhibition at Riverside Café Gallery 05 March- 01 April, Farnham Maltings, Bridge Square, Farnham GU9 7QR

Are you aged 18 years or under and consider yourself an up and coming artist? Perhaps your child has a flair for drawing? Farnham Maltings is offering a fantastic chance for budding young artists to have their work displayed in the building’s Riverside Café Gallery.

The Young Portrait Artist Award aims to celebrate local, creative talent through the form of a competition. Interested artists should submit their work for judging by a panel including Caroline Jackman (Director of the New Ashgate Gallery), Jonathan Parsons (Artist and UCA Fine Art Lecturer) and Jonathan Thompson (Painter-Printmaker). They will then select 15 finalists whose work will be displayed throughout the gallery. We shall be contacting local schools and clubs to find possible entrants but we will also accept work from individuals who wish to get involved.

Not only will the winners get their work exhibited, one finalist from each age group (7-11 years, 12-15 years and 16-18 years) will also receive a prize sponsored by Pullingers and a place at an arts workshop with artist Jonathan Thompson. The award winners will be announced at the Spark Festival on the 18 March 2016.

Anna Garrett who is co-ordinating the competition says that, ‘The Award is an opportunity for young artists to express themselves through art, giving them the chance to show their artwork in a professional space and have their talent recognised!’ She states that, ‘When I was growing up I really enjoyed entering art competitions, and valued the experience. Now organising exhibitions at the Riverside Café Gallery at the Farnham Maltings and being a practicing artist myself, I wanted to engage the local community and have a positive impact on the lives of local young people through this competition’. In order to encourage young artists to get involved, she offered a few pieces of advice, ‘We are looking for originality and creativity. You can paint or draw someone you know, or it can be a celebrity. Get involved and submit your work!’

The deadline for the competition is the 29 January 2016. Please deliver your work and £3 entry fee to the Box Office, Farnham Maltings, labelled with your name, age, phone number and email address. Artists can use any medium, but no photography please, and the artwork can be sized up to the maximum of A4. The exhibition dates in the Riverside Café will be between the 05 March – 01 April 2016.

This is a hugely exciting opportunity for young artists to have their work assessed by a panel of industry-related experts. Moreover, it also gives a chance for children and young adults to have fun and enjoy being part of local creativity.

If you have any questions about the competition please contact Anna Garrett (anna.garrett@farnhammaltings.com) for further details.

We look forward to receiving your entries!
