Big Dance Bus: ‘Pop Up Ballroom & Ready-Made Rave’
Sat 18 June, 12pm – 5pm Free event

Yesterday Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, was treated to a preview of the Big Dance Pledge – a 3 minute dance created by internationally acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan with music by Nitin Sawhney. The Big Dance Pledge will be performed today by over 40,000 people in 43 countries around the world.

On Saturday 18 June we are delighted that the Big Dance festival will be coming to Farnham Maltings! An iconic London double-decker Routemaster bus will make a special journey to Farnham to lauch the festival. However this is no ordinary London bus; this bus comes complete with a pop up ballroom with its own dance-floor complete with DJ, MC, sound system and resident dance company to provide a big free party and unforgettable experience for the people of Farnham.

“Real carnival feel, such a joy”

“How wonderful you made a theatre out of a car park!”

Big Dance BusThe Big Dance Bus aims to give new audiences the opportunity to discover a multitude of dance styles, from ballet to waltz via contemporary and tango, all on their doorstep and as part of an innovative experience. This has all been made possible thanks to the arrival of the Maltings’ newest resident company Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Re:Bourne who will be giving a special performances introducing their unique style of narrative dance to Farnham. Throughout the day, there will be free performances and workshops led by the Maltings’ resident dance companies New Adventures and Re:Bourne, The Dance Movement and Stopgap Dance Company.

‘We are delighted to be launching our partnership with the Maltings through an event that symbolises everything we care about at New Adventures and Re:Bourne – world-leading dance, lots of fun and laughter and some unexpected moments of surprise along the way. We look forward to meeting the community on 18 June.’ James Mackenzie-Blackman, Executive Director, New Adventures and Re:Bourne

Big Dance is a biennial festival led by the Mayor of London in partnership with People Dancing and the Big Dance Hubs, a network of leading dance organisations across the UK.
The Big Dance tour showcases an exciting mixture of professional and community performances from local talent. Big Dance began in 2006 and has toured to all sorts of locations including shopping centres, parts, palaces and high streets; the 2012 festival, part of London’s Cultural Olympiad, was the UK’s biggest ever celebration of dance, with over 3,500 events. The 2016 tour will be Big Dance’s final series of events closing on their 10 year anniversary.

The Big Dance in Farnham will be a fantastic, interactive event which will have you grooving along, no matter what you’re age, dance experience or ability. From the Charleston to ballroom, disco fever to hip hop, hula to open floor jams there will be something for everyone. Bring the whole family and come watch, be inspired and join in the fun!

Also keep your eyes peeled for the big event which marks the centrepiece of this year’s festival. The Mayor is inviting 1000 dancers to participate in Big Dance Trafalgar Square on Saturday 2 July – an extended version of the Big Dance Pledge which Akram has created as London’s signature Big Dance work.
