Take on Me

By Dante or Die,
Winner of Arts Partnership Surrey and Farnham Maltings ‘Not for the Likes of Me’ funding

A woman enters the changing room for the first time in decade.

A lifeguard twiddles his thumbs as he dreams of being a real hero.

A crammed aerobics class watches their bodies move in the unforgiving mirrors.

Take On Me, a new site-specific theatre show that dives beneath the surface of fitness fads comes to Farnham Leisure Centre and Ash Manor Sports Centre as part of a tour of Surrey leisure centres this Autumn. Set in the untrammeled world of 1980’s luminous headbands, leotards and legwarmers, the show will play each weekend at a Leisure Centre throughout the county coming to Farnham on Sat 08 October and Ash on Sun 23 October where a ticket will cost the same as an exercise class.

The new show that throws open the doors behind health and fitness comes from the site-specific theatre company Dante or Die, who has previously performed I Do, in hotels around the UK and Ireland, the and most recently Handle with Care performed in Storage Units across the country.

With distinctive Dante or Die bravura, Take On Me is a bold and comic look at how unlikely relationships can grow in a setting designed help you achieve the better version of yourself.

Take on Me is the winner of Arts Partnership Surrey & Farnham Maltings’ ‘Not for the Likes of Me’ commission, seed funded by Harlow Playhouse and a recipient of funding from Arts Council England.  Take On Me will be directly inspired by stories of people who use and work in Surrey’s leisure centres, created in collaboration with local people by Dante or Die’s Artistic Directors Daphna Attias & Terry O’Donovan, alongside playwright Andrew Muir.

Audiences will be divided into two groups in this fly-on-the-wall promenade experience, as they are led through the different areas of the centre by musicians strumming new versions of 80’s pop hits. From the pool, to the changing rooms, the gym and beyond you’ll hear the inner voices of the central characters as they strive for a better version of themselves.

Alongside the professional cast Dante or Die are working with a supporting cast of local people playing a variety of parts from members of leisure centre staff to local choirs and gym buffs. We’ll announce next week some of the local Farnham residents who are taking part in the production.

The production comes to Farnham Leisure Centre on Sat 08 October with 2 hour long performances at 6.30pm & 8.30pm. Tickets cost the same as an exercise class( £6.40) and are available from the Leisure Centre’s website, www.placesforpeopleleisure.org or by calling 01252 723208.
