This three hour session will teach you the basics of machine knitting, equipping you with the skills to begin your own machine knitting journey. We'll use domestic Brother knitting machines to learn how to cast on, cast off and hand manipulate stitches to make decorative effects. You'll go home with plenty of swatches made using the techniques you've learnt on the day.
Materials: All machines and materials are provided.
Please bring a pen and notepad. This class is limited to 3 students so book early to secure your place!
Tutor: Ria Burns
Ria designs, dyes and makes the knitwear for the brand on vintage domestic hand flat knitting machines from their studio in Bristol. She also manages the dye garden situated at her home. She graduatied with a first in BA Fashion Design from Batley School of Art, where she chose to specialise in fashion knitwear. She also went on to get an MA in Textile Design at Bath Spa University. Ria’s eponymous brand of botanically dyed, British wool knitwear was researched and developed during her time at Bath Spa and launched in September 2018 via a Crowdfunder campaign. Ria is an active member of the Heritage Crafts Association and the Knitting and Crochet Guild.
