This workshop will cover techniques on how to use the fude (brush) with sumi (ink) on washi (paper) to make the strokes and marks that are used to write Kana and Kanji (Japanese characters). You will learn how to build up these marks to create a finished piece of work. In Japan shodo is regarded as one of the core traditional Japanese crafts, developed over the last 16 centuries, it is used as a meditative tool to achieve a calm mind.

Tutor: Nao Fukumoto O'Neill
Nao is textile designer and weaver with over 18 years’ experience creating textiles and Japanese crafts workshops. She graduated a Masters degree at Okinawa Prefecture University of Arts in Japan, participated in the exchange program at Surrey Institute Art and Design (UCA) Textile MA, and has won numerous awards for her work.
