Conducted by Calum Fraser with F & B Orchestra and professional soloists.
Since its first performance at the Birmingham Festival in 1846, when it was greeted with “a unanimous volley of plaudits”, Mendelssohn’s Elijah has been on every choral singer’s list of must-do works. Structurally, the work is clearly influenced by Bach and Handel, but its highly dramatic style constitutes a significant step forward from its Baroque predecessors. Elijah has many other outstanding qualities, including the imaginative orchestration and the sheer beauty of many of the arias and choruses. Above all, there is no mistaking the work’s considerable dramatic impact, epitomised by the vivid characterisation of Elijah himself.
