free events for everyone during dementia action week

The Maltings is getting ready for Farnham Dementia Action Week (21 – 25 May).

Over last couple of years we’ve been proud to help establish the Farnham Dementia Action Alliance (DAA), a coalition to work with local businesses to showcase what support is available locally for those living with dementia and for their carers. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to help to make our town more dementia-friendly with public events, like one-off Dementia Friends workshops, alongside our established progamme of activities for people living with dementia and their carers, including Singing for the Mind.

Next week’s activities for Dementia Action Week also include events to raise awareness and understanding of dementia. On Friday 25 May we will be hosting a preview screening of Third Quarter, a new short film about a man desperately searching for the meaning of a mysterious envelope, forgetting it was he who wrote it. This will include an introduction by the Farnham DAA, Alastair Shanks, and a Q&A with the film’s director.

We’re also holding a free Dementia Friends workshop which is a fantastic opportunity to learn a bit about dementia and think about small ways we can all support others with the disease. Previous attendees have said that it’s “very helpful in terms of understanding life from the dementia sufferer” and that the session is “practical and [gives] a real sense that stigma is being pushed back”.

If you’re shopping in Farnham Waitrose during May you can also support Singing for the Mind and the dementia programme by putting your green tokens in the right box.

Dementia Action Week has something for everyone next week – whether you feel like you know nothing about dementia, you’re looking for personal support as you have a friend or family member who’s living with dementia, or perhaps you’re looking for dementia-friendly activities.
