All That Shimmers

by Denise Jaques – Mosaic Happy

Riverside Café Gallery, Farnham Maltings | 27 April – 23 May 2019

The Riverside Café Gallery is delighted to welcome Farnham artist Denise Jaques with her collection of contemporary mixed media mosaics. Fascinated with the journey of experimentation and excited by the unknown destination, Denise’s work has a strong sense of colour, pattern and rhythm, whilst playing with the idea of distorted reflections.

The work in this exhibition shows a selection of pieces from three bodies of current work.

Pieces of Gold
This latest body of work uses mixed media and texture in more depth. Mixing traditional tesserae and found materials including slate, stone, glass, with cement and pieces of shimmering gold coloured glass.

Land and Sea
This collection features colourful and monochromatic abstract landscapes and seascapes. It aims to create a sense of place, inspired by places lived and loved.

All that Shimmers
Denise creates a range of sculptures, swaying mosaics and panels for the garden. Her use of reflective materials such as mirror and iridescent glass, play with the changing natural light.

Artist Bio
Denise works from her studio in North Farnham, spending her time working on commissions, creating work for exhibitions, teaching and raising family. She describes herself as a mixed media artist, passionate about working with a range of media and frustrated by the idea of being restricted by just one discipline. Denise originally trained in textile design at Central St. Martins, London. Her experimental journey from textiles design to contemporary mosaics has been a fluid one. The exploration of surface texture, use of reflective materials, and a strong sense of colour, texture and mood have been dominant characteristic in her work throughout. Denise has had a successful career teaching textiles and mosaics for over 20 years. She runs regular Mosaic Happy workshops from her studio in Farnham and here at Farnham Maltings and was the winner of Surrey Artist of the Year 2016.
