What an awards season it has been. Just when you think it’s all tied up, Parasite made history last night as the first foreign language film to win the coveted Best Picture award at the 92nd Academy Awards. With further wins for 1917, Jojo Rabbit and Le Mans ’66, the 2020 awards season concluded with a great selection of films coming up in the #filmmaltings programme. Here’s what we have coming up from the winners below.

Le Mans ’66 [12A]

The roar of the Ford v. Ferrari iconic race did not go unnoticed by the Academy, as Le Mans ’66 won Sound Editing as well as Film Editing. It tells the true story of American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles as they battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. The film has achieved a healthy collection of awards this past season and makes the perfect film to enjoy this Valentine’s day.

Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy stole the show last night, claiming the most awards of the evening! Bong Joon-ho returns with this black comedy about wealth, greed and class division. When Kim Ki-teak’s (Song Kang-ho) son gets a tutoring job at a lavish home, the Kim family attempt to take over the Park family’s affluent lifestyle. The foreign language masterpiece opened to critical acclaim last week with 5 star reviews across the board.

Taika Waititi retained the glory for Adapted Screenplay award for his comedic adaptation of Christine Leunens’ novel about the Hitler Youth, Caging Skies. This World War II satire follows a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

It was another win for Bombshell’s Make-up and Hair team last night. Based on the real scandal, the film is a revealing look inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time; Fox News, and the explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who created it. Featuring a stellar cast who were nominated for their roles, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie.

A slightly different story for 1917 following a storming BAFTA ceremony last week, but the film still took away 3 Oscars including the well-deserved Achievement for Cinematography for Roger Deakins and Best Visual Effects. Two young British privates during the First World War are given an impossible mission: deliver a message deep in enemy territory that will stop 1,600 men (including one of the soldier’s brothers), from walking straight into a deadly trap.
